Workshop on promoting rights of LGBTI Communities in Nepal

On 19 February, Community Solution Initiatives (CSI), in cooperation with Blue Diamond Society and Rural Development and Research Center, held a workshop on promoting the rights of LGBTI Communities in Nepal. The workshop was supported by the Global Diplomacy Lab (GDL) based in Berlin. Over 25 participants, representing LGBTI communities from far-west province, elected representatives of Dhangadhi Sub-Metropolitan City, media workers, and women networks actively participated in the workshop. At the workshop, Deputy Mayor of Dhangadhi Sub-Metropolitan City, Sushila Mishra Bhatta, shared her vision and commitment to lend support to LGBTI communities to bring them to mainstream. Similarly, Chairperson of the Blue Diamond Society Dhangadhi, Raju Lama highlighted the issue and challenges that LGBTI community is facing in different fronts which have impeded them from enjoying civic rights.

Speaking at the workshop, Chairperson of Rural Development and Research Centre, Dhangadhi Dirgha Raj Upadhyaya and governance activist Thakur Prasad Kariyapradhan echoed the need of addressing problems facing by minorities and disadvantaged communities including LGBTI to enable them to assert and enjoy their human rights. 

The participants highlighted the need to put further advocacy efforts to mainstream the participation of LGBTI community to the governance process at local level.
